A set of bronze bookends by Gorham Co., circa 1921 and designed by the German/American sculptor Franz F. Ziegler. Design picturing a dancing young woman with flowers and ribbon, marked and dated “FF Ziegler 1921, Gorham Co. Founders #0521”, size: 6 ¾ in. height x 4 3/8 in. width x 3 3/8 in. depth (base), nice patina, condition excellent.Franz F. Ziegler (1869 - ?) was born in Germany in 1869 and came to America in 1892. He studied sculpture with the famous sculptor Karl Bitter who was also German-American. In the early 1900’s he became a contract artist for the Gorham Company foundry in Providence, RI, where he worked until his retirement in 1932. For Gorham he produced silver and bronze designs as well as bronze sculptures that were sold in Gorham’s store.
