A non-objective abstract painting by Hildegarde Haas, watercolor and mixed pigments on paper, circa 1960, size: 17 3/4 x 11 3/4 in. sight, 24 3/4 x 17 3/4 in. framed, condition excellent. Haas (German/ American 1926-2002), moved to Colorado Springs when she was 11. She studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center and later at the University of Chicago and in New York City. In New York she studied with Vaclav Vytlacil at the Arts Students League. She moved to northern California in the 1950's where she remained until passing away in 2002. Haas loved to paint scenes from nature, but is also known for her paintings created while employing her synesthesia. Seynesthesia is a perceptual phenomeon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. Haas was born with projective synesthesia, which caused her to see colors and forms while listening to music. At times she would employ this ability to create some of her paintings. She would listen to music and paint what she experienced. This work would appear to be related to such technique.
