ADOLF HITLER ARCHITECTURAL SKETCH
ADOLF HITLER ARCHITECTURAL SKETCH
Item Details
Description
A rare and most desirable Adolf Hitler piece, his original pencil sketch a top, down interior view of Hitler's proposed 'House of Architecture', to be erected immediately adjacent to the 'House of Culture' on Prinzregentenstrasse in Munich. The sketch was given to Hitler's confidante and advisor on architectural matters, ALBERT SPEER (1905-1981), the Minister of Armaments and War Production, later convicted of war crimes at Nuremberg. The rather detailed sketch was executed by Hitler on a 19 x 14.25 in. sheet of beige paper. It depicts columns, an open-topped dome, multiple galleries, etc., with a small side view included as well. On the verso Speer has written: 'H. d. Arch. 38' identifying the piece and his asking price of '3.5' thousand reichsmarks. He also writes ‘112’, a catalog number indicating which sketch this is out of the 125 retained by him. The drawing is tipped to a cardboard backing along a central vertical fold and for about six inches at top, with some resulting glue stains (also appearing at bottom) which do not materially detract, else fine condition. This drawing appears in Price’s book ‘Adolf Hitler: The Unknown Artist’, plate 665 with another Hitler/Speer sketch of the same building shown in plate 683. In Speer’s memoirs ‘Inside the Third Reich’ on page 146, he discusses his collection of Hitler sketches. In part: ‘...I kept these quick sketches of Hitler’s, noting their dates and subjects, and have preserved them to this day. It is interesting that of total hundred and twenty-five such drawings, a good fourth of them relate to the Linz building project, which was always closest to his heart. Equally frequent are sketches for theaters...’. Accompanying this lot is a copy of a certificate of provenance from the grandson of Albert Speer, Berthold Speer. In 2022 Berthold sent this sketch along with approx. 30 other sketches to German militaria auctioneers Hermann Historica for auction, approx. 12 of which are documented in Price’s book. A copy of the sale receipt is included as well. With original glassine wrapper.
