Head of the Nazi Party Chancellery and private secretary to Adolf Hitler, by the end of World War II Bormann had become second only to Hitler himself in terms of real political power. Important partly-printed D.S. signed in bold red indelible ink, 4pp. legal folio, [Berlin], Jan. 31, 1943, the architect’s copy for a contract for modifications to the Riechschancellery building in Berlin to be designed by Professor Heinrich Michaelis and executed by the carpentry firm of Heinrich Grotemeyer, directed to Bormann and setting forth a number of clauses outlining the work to be accomplished and by which party, the estimate, and so forth. Specifically, the contract calls for: ‘The construction and delivery of doors, sky lights, heater paneling and wall pedestal’, amounting to some 81,000 Reichsmarks'. WITH: a 4pp. legal folio typescript of cost breakdowns with detailed descriptions of the work to be done. Hitler had the grandiose new Chancellery built in great haste in 1939 because he wanted to impress visiting dignitaries as he lobbied to dominate Europe. As events actually unfolded, Hitler’s private bunker was constructed below the Chancellery garden, and after their suicides, his body and that if his wife were burned in its courtyard. The building was destroyed during the fall of Berlin. Bormann often oversaw real estate and building projects as comptroller of Hitler’s finances. File holes, fine condition.
