Description
'Operation Vengeance' was the American military operation to kill Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto on 18 April 1943 during the Solomon Islands campaign. Yamamoto, commander of the Combined Fleet, was killed near Bougainville Island when his transport aircraft was shot down by U.S.A.A.F. fighter aircraft operating from Kukum Field on Guadalcanal. A fine signed book: 'Get Yamamoto' by Burke Davis (New York: Randon House), 1969. First edition, 232pp. 8vo., with dust wrapper. The book is signed by seven participants in the attack on Yamamoto's aircraft. The half title page is signed by RED BARBER who notes: 'It has taken many years for history to prove the facts as I know wer[e] correct all along.' The title page and blank page opposite are signed by six others, including: TOM LANPHIER, JR., LOUIS KITTEL, JOHN MITCHELL, BESBY F. HOLMES, JULIUS JACOBSON, and DOUG CANNING, almost all of whom add their wartime rank and military assignment. A rare assemblage of names.
