Description
A collection of thirty-seven b/w U.S. Army Air Force intelligence photographs, none larger than 10 x 8 in., depicting the bombing raids on Kure, Japan in 1945. Images show: aerial views of the city and targets such as the Tokuyama fueling station, closeups of the B-29 and B-24 heavy bombers in flight, mushroom clouds, etc. All photos bear a printed number at the top margin and are marked ‘Restricted’. These intelligence photos are part of a collection belonging to Sergeant Joseph A. Parisi of the 497th Bombardment Group. The group earned two Distinguished Unit Citations for their raids against Japan, assisting in the assault on Okinawa, the very raids depicted in these images. Sixteen of Parisi’s own personal photographs accompany this lot, showing: Parisi in uniform and visiting a wounded soldier, a veterans cemetery, the 497th at a church service in Goat Gulch, Parisi posing with his wife, and two small photos focusing on the nose art of aircraft. Also present is a typed document listing the personal property of Parisi and a program for the Spence Field Open Post on July 4, 1943. The photos are slightly curled, otherwise very good.
