Description
A fascinating, fine content typed D.S. letter written by the Hungarian Prisoner's Committee held at the Dachau concentration camp after it was liberated by the Allies, 2pp. 4to., Dachau, July 11, 1945, addressed to Colonel Roy, the Allied commander of the camp, relaying observations and requests of Hungarian prisoners who had been liberated by American forces three months earlier. In part: '...In connection with the imminent evacuation...The Hungarian Committee has the honor to submit to you the following observations. The ex-prisoners have...bad experiences of the forced movements they dislike and are afraid of. Owing to the liberation...they live now under much more comfortable circumstances...they still don’t love Dachau with its bad memories, fences, and restrictions...they fear being transferred to a place which is even less suitable for that purpose. On the other hand their main aim is to get home as soon as possible...If there were an absolute unavoidable necessity to evacuate the camp and the question of returning home could not be resolved...The Hungarian Committee...begs to insist on following points...General conditions of the new emplacement must not be worse...The unity and present composition of national groups should be maintained...The evacuation must not take place suddenly...The National committee should be kept informed on the exact position of the question...'. Signed at the conclusion by a representative of the Committee. Slightly creased and toned, else fine. Dachau was surrendered to the Allies on April 28th, but clearly prisoners were still housed there for months afterwards. Eventually however prisoners were all removed to ‘displaced persons’ camps or released, and the camp was used as a confinement space for war criminals. It would later serve as a site for war crimes trials.
