Large Adolf Hitler cast bronze bust, approx. 10.5 x 17 in., signed at the base of the neck on the reverse ‘Joh. Rottger’ by famous sculptor Johannes Rottger. Although showing a larger than normal signature impression than is usually seen, there is no visible foundry mark. This bust was likely cast early, as Rottger died in 1943. The bust is lacking its original marble base, which could be replaced, as the original mounting base is completely intact with two threaded bolt holes present. Interestingly, there is a large dent at the base of the skull behind the right ear, as well as two other notable dents to the forehead and the top of the head. The sharp creases of these dents make it clear these were made by the butt of a rifle, indicating this bust was likely recovered at the end of the war by an emotional Allied soldier or two, taking out their frustrations on anything connected to Hitler for their part in a long and brutal war. All in all, excellent condition.
