Item Details
Description
CONTINENTAL SCHOOL (18th CENTURY) After HENRY ROBERT MORLAND The Unlucky Boy Oil on panel, 26.5 x 21cm In fine giltwood and gesso frame by Cornelius Callaghan, makers mark verso Cornelius Callaghan was a well-known carver, gilder, looking-glass and picture-frame manufacturer whose label appears on several recorded frames. In the Dublin Directories he is recorded at Clare Street between 1822 and 1844. He is presumably a relation of the Cornelius Callaghan recorded between 1770 and 1815 in Britain Street and Mary Street, a glazier, painter, map and print-seller (see Knight of Glin, 'Dublin Directories and Trade Labels', Furniture History, 1985, pp. 263, fig. 7).
