Moon, London • Printed by Day & Son, London • Full plate number 200; published in Vol. 6 Egypt and Nubia (1849) • Inscribed 'KarnaK/David Roberts R.A. - L. Haghe lith.' lower left • Tinted lithograph • Framed • 16 5/7' x 24' sheet size • 20 1/2' x 28 1/2' frame size Footnotes: N.B. Roberts began preparation for the lithographic sketches in 1838, and over the next couple of years he traveled to Alexandria, Cairo, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan, and Lebanon, all the while taking detailed and delicate sketches of his experiences. Upon his return, Roberts began working with lithographer Louis Haghe. The work was called by historian John Roland Abbey (1894-1969) 'one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and [...] the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph' (Travel in Aquatint and Lithography, 1770-1860).
