Description: Illuminated Manuscript. Pen-and-ink and colored pencils, on thin board. Calendar created to record the memory of Simon Solomon, Simchah son of Yitzchak Dovid, died 9th Teveth, 1925. Includes small original photograph of the deceased, with annual listing (1926-1982) of the Yohrzeit date, surrounded by colorful border incorporating flags of the United States and the Zionist movement, and other iconographic motifs. Artist recorded below. 34.3x25 cm (13½x9¾").An uncommon example of American-Jewish artistic work, created by a talented artisan in St. Louis in 1926 with motifs pointing both toward his Jewish heritage and patriotism for America. Previously framed, and on the retained frame back is affixed a printed announcement by the artist M.J. Gelb, specifying costs for producing such custom Yohrzeit charts (the frame back and announcement are worn). There are two similar illuminated single page manuscripts by M.J. Gelb in the collection of The Jewish Museum, New York.
