Description: Stereo view albumen photographs, on original printed yellow mount with imprint in red in left and right margins of "U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West by J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson." Paper title and credit label on the back. Mount measures 11.5x17.7 cm (4½x7").Striking photograph of two Ute natives standing facing each other - one is evidently counting out numbers with the fingers of his left hand, the other is holding a long rifle. The printed label on the back reads "Indians of the Colorado Valley - U-in-ta Utes. Living in the U-in-ta Valley, on the Western Slope of the Wasatch Mountains, in Utah. Indians Counting. No. 97. Photographed by Hillers." John K. "Jack" Hillers, a native of Germany, emigrated to the United States, served in the U.S. military in the Civil War and post-war frontier, joined Powell's Colorado River expedition as a boatman, and rose to become one of his main photographers on later explorations.
