Is widely regarded as one of American finest watercolor painters. In a career spanning over half a century, he created some 1,400 paintings that pay homage to his deep respect for nature. Born in Ashtabula Harbor, OH on April 9, 1893, Burchfield studied at the Cleveland School of Art and began his career as a wallpaper designer for M.H. Birge & Sons Company. While living in Buffalo, NY, the landscape inspired his Regionalist period with paintings of small-town industrial scenes. The artist was the subject a solo exhibit that launched his career at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Charles Burchfield: Early Watercolors 1916 18 in 1930, and in December 1936, Life magazine anointed him as one of American 10 greatest painters. During the 1940s, he created his most acclaimed work: mystical watercolors depicting nature in exaggerated shapes and forms. A month before his death on January 11, 1967 in West Seneca, NY, Buffalo State College honored his work by creating the Charles Burchfield Center. It holds the largest public collection of his works by Burchfield, over 70 volumes of his journals, and a scale re-creation of his artist studio.
