Item Details
Description

MT. WASHINGTON LAVA / SICILIAN GLASS VASE, shiny opaque black with multi-color inclusions, symmetrical double-handled urn form with waisted neck and two applied reeded scroll handles, polished pontil mark. Mt. Washington Glass Co. 1878-1880. 5 3/4" H.
Literature: Parallels Wilson - Mt. Washington & Pairpoint Glass, Vol. 1, p. 116, fig. 6-11, middle.
Catalogue Note: In 1878, Mt. Washington introduced its Sicilian glass which was made using lava or volcanic slag. It appears that they discontinued the line in 1880. Frederick Shirley was granted three patents for the production and design of this glass, which today is considered to be the first and most innovative art glass produced in America. Shirley went on to formulate and patent Burmese glass in 1885, and develop Mt. Washington's famous Peach Blow, Rose Amber, and Royal Flemish art glass lines.

Provenance:

Glass deaccessioned by the Bennington Museum, Bennington, VT. All proceeds will go toward the museum's Collections Acquisition Fund.
Ex-collection of Clarence and Betty Maier.

Condition

Undamaged with some minor surface wear; having some interior residue which doesn't affect the aesthetics of the vase, as made.
