Bronze Sculpture by Stephen De Staebler (American, 1933-2011), titled "Man with Tar Heart", 1981. This piece is a cast bronze sculpture representing an abstracted human male torso with a head, featuring indistinct facial features that seem to be veiled. The torso subtly suggests the presence of a heart. The sculpture is finished with a dark bronze patina, enriched in areas with red-orange and black tones. It is an Artist's Proof (A.P.). The dimensions of the sculpture are approximately 26 1/2" x 15 1/2" x 9". The signature, date, and edition are incised near the bottom edge on the verso as "De Staebler 1981 AP". Comes with original receipt from Hansen Fuller Goldeen Gallery, San Francisco. Dated February 20th, 1982. This bronze torso is featured on a full page of Stephen De Staebler's book "Matter + Spirit" as plate 75, with attribution to purchaser John A. Williams. The hardcover book Matter and Spirit: Stephen De Staebler by Timothy Burgard, is included with this lot. This item originates from the estate of John A. Williams, a distinguished philanthropist and renowned collector. Mr. Williams and his partner Dewitt Hart were influential members of San Francisco's art society and were celebrated for their discerning taste in modern, ethnographic, and fine art. Over the years, they hosted numerous exhibitions in their home, showcasing their prestigious collection to appreciative audiences. All proceeds of items from this estate benefit the Hart Williams Rainbow Fund, a nonprofit working with the LGBTQIA+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
