EUROPEAN RELIGIOUS SILK-EMBROIDERED NEEDLEWORK PICTURE OF SAINT EULALIA, silk, gilt-thread, and engraving, depicting St. Eulalia wearing a short blue gown over a beige and tan skirt with a mantle draped over her shoulders and knotted at her waist, the background featuring a cityscape and green fields with a cross resting on a stone pedestal that she leans against, surrounded by images from her martyrdom, cherubs, and Rococo scrolls, engravings on paper are utilized for faces, arms, legs, and bodies of figures, lower edge with "SANTa VLaLYa" in a white cartouche. Housed under glass in a period hand-carved gilt frame, corners have been reinforced with coarse linen fabric glued to back, backing board with "XX198" and "Sta. Eulalia." written in black and later applied typed label identifying the piece as "Italian". Possibly Spain or Italy. 18th century. 7 1/4" x 11 3/8" sight, 13 1/4" x 17 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: Saint Eulalia (c. 289-304 A.D.) was a Spanish martyr, the patroness of Barcelona, her day is February 12.
