Ivan Frederick Boesky is a former stock trader who became infamous for his prominent role in an insider trading scandal that occurred in the United States during the mid-1980s.

He was charged and pled guilty to insider trading, was fined a record $100 million, served three years in prison and became an informant.

Boesky made his money by investing in the stocks of companies that were primed for takeover.

He embodied the 1980s junk bond boom, in which leveraged buyouts of companies were financed by junk debt, and a life of excess and greed were the norm. As a result of his actions, Boesky is permanently banned from operating in the financial services industry.

The character of Gordon Gekko in the Oliver Stone movie Wall Street (1987), played by Michael Douglas and starring Charlie Sheen, Daryl Hannah, Martin Sheen and Hal Holbrook, is based at least in part on Boesky, especially regarding a famous speech he delivered in May 1986 on the positive aspects of greed during a commencement ceremony at the Haas School of Business of UC Berkeley, where he said in part "I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself".
