Antique Victorian c1880 Black Mantle. This antique Victorian c1880 mantle features a black silk shell with a high pleated collar, 2 tiers of wide handmade corded lace over black grosgrain silk flounce, extensive black glass trim at the neck and throughout the garment. The piece sits atop the shoulders and has a dramatic V shaped back panel that terminates in a large wide double black silk bow. As well as long front tabs. with large jet appliques that most likely had a dangling beaded fringe. There is a connecting elasticities band most likely added at a later date that would wrap around the wearer's waist. There is a conservation effort to the inner neck where black acetate has been added for support. The mantle has a brown polished cotton lining and hook and eye closures down the front. Laying flat the mantle measures: shoulders 13'', length 33''. The mantle is in fair condition with losses to the black beading, 1 missing black silk shoulder flounce, and degraded silk.
