Biography: Henri Cleenewerck was born in Watou, Belgium and attended the academies in Poperinge and Iepe. He came to the United States and was working in Savannah, Georgia in 1860. Around 1865 he traveled to Cuba, painting views of the Canimar River, San Antonio de los Banos and exotic jungle paintings. His work was highly acclaimed and he became a celebrated artist in Cuba, but he left there at the start of the War for Independence in 1868. Cleenewerck returned to the United States, becoming a naturalized citizen and traveling extensively across the country. He visited Colorado and San Francisco, making a number of sketches, and there is evidence to suggest that he may have painted around the San Francisco Bay region and the Northern California coast. Cleenewerck apparently returned to Europe, for at the Brussels Salon of 1878, he indicated his residence as Poperinge. However, in 1879 he returned to San Francisco, living for three years at the Chamerlain house on the corner of Stockton and Bush streets. In 1882 Cleenewerck exhibited at New York's National Academy of Design; that summer he spent sketching in Colorado. From 1880 to 1900 he traveled regularly from America to Europe, participating in Salon exhibits in Brussels and Paris. He apparently also painted murals in the church of St. Hilaire, France, the restoration of which is mentioned in modern city correspondence. His painting style, always based in realism, later shows influences of Courbet, Corot, and the Barbizon School. Cleenewerck died in Brussels in 1901, though his official residence was listed as New York. The town of Poperinge, Belgium held a retrospective of his works in 1995.
