Description
Society of Antiquaries. SOME ACCOUNT OF THE ABBEY CHURCH OF ST. ALBAN. ILLUSTRATIVE OF THE PLANS, ELEVATIONS, AND SECTIONS OF THAT BUILDING. London: Printed by Nichols, Son, and Bentley (for the Society of Antiquaries), 1813. Large Folio, 27" x 20". An untrimmed example. [2], 20, 7, [1] pp. + 19 engraved plates (including some double-page) drawn by John Carter and engraved by James Basire. Text by Sir H.C. Englefield and Richard Gough. Bound in period marbled boards, rebacked in calf in the 20th century. *************** First edition of this rarely-encountered work on the architecture of St. Albans. The present example is a large, untrimmed copy, and we presume one of very few (if any) that remain in this state. Of even further interest here is the presence of 7 large (mostly) plates laid in at front by a previous owner or researcher, apparently all relating to St. Albans.
Condition
Boards quite rubbed, edges worn. Contents with foxing and some offsetting, most plates with light faded water-stain to lower margin (see photos).
