Description
Louis Dupre (1789-1837), Original lithograph hand coloured with watercolour, Titled Un Prince Armenien et sa Femme - Duz-Oglou / Armenian Prince and his Wife. From his travel book Voyage a Athenes et a Constantinople, published in Paris 1825. Plate number, titled under with embossed blind stamp with Dupre's monogram. The seated Armenian with his standing wife is believed to be Sarkis Chelebi of the Duz-Oglou family of Istanbul. The important Duz Oglou family had ties with the Sultans and the Ottoman state elite, and they were assigned the task of tax collecting, money lending and looking after the financial affairs of Sultans, Grand Viziers, and Pashas. The family was a Catholic Amira Armenian family that served in various positions from 1758-1880, and primarily the Imperial Mint, and as imperial jewellers. Lithographer: Lemercier, Bernard & Co.
