Description
Indian miniature paintings, along with other miniature arts, were introduced by the Muslim rulers during the Mughal Empire and flourished between the 16th and 18th century. Originally, the miniatures showed mainly Persian subjects, but over time, Hindu subject matter became increasingly more popular and numerous styles were developed. In India’s eastern state of Odisha, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, lies the city of Puri, home to the Jagannath Temple. Jagannath is Sanskrit for “Lord of the Universe”, a form of Krishna, who is only worshipped in Odisha. Cloth-based scroll paintings called Patripatti became souvenirs for pilgrims who visited the sacred site up until the turn of the 20th century. This antique, traditional Jatripatti with a focus on Lord Jagannath’s temple in Puri is remarkable in its size and quite rare. The largest figures in the painting are the two temple lions in the center on the bottom. They are just under 1 inch by 1 inch, while most of the other figures are less than 1/2 inch in height. image 10.125 x your 9.25 inches, Framed 14 x 10.5 inches
