Description
He commanded the 1st British Army Corps, which covered the reembarkation of British troops at Dunkirk in 1940. Deputy to Eisenhower as Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces in North Africa (1943), he played a leading role in the Tunisian and Italian campaigns. In November 1944, he took command of the Mediterranean theatre of operations.
