An Anglo-Irishman, after graduating from Eton he joined the Indian Army and fought against the rebellion. He then served in Abyssinia and Afghanistan. He took part in the Boer War at Transval. He was one of the best Field Marshals of the Victorian era.Typed letter signed dated Ascot, 20.12.1912 to Paul Langer Senior: "...I feel sure the Guernsey men have not a monopoly of patriotism..."; Typed letter signed and dated Ascot, 18.12.1908 a_ Paul Langer Senior: "...
