Provenance
A Toronto Collection.
In 1974, Daphne Odjig provided a series of stories and illustrations for Dr. Herbert Schwarz's Tales from the Smokehouse (Edmonton: Hurtig, 1976). Among these images and tales is the present Nanabajou and his Daughter, which can be found on pages 21-25. The story stands out for its bold exploration of desire, power, and consequence. The tale unfolds with the libidinous Nanabajou, a revered warrior and healer, who transforms into a stranger and engages in a provocative encounter with his eldest daughter, only to face the wrath of his many wives by the tale's end.
