Description
WILLIAM NOAH (1943-2020) QAMANI'TUAQ (BAKER LAKE)
Two Arctic Umingmak, 1994
dry medium (pastel?) over black ink on paper, 10.25 x 14 in (26 x 35.6 cm)
signed, titled, dated, and signed again, "ᓄᐊ / Two Arctic Umingmak. 1994 / by William Noah".
Provenance
A Toronto Collection.
William Noah was the youngest of Jessie Oonark’s children and, like his other talented siblings, carved out his own distinctive career as an artist — specifically as a gifted printmaker and graphic artist. Whereas Noah's most famous images depict shamans, he was also a gifted naturalist as well. We love his sensitive depiction of the Arctic landscape where the only trace of humankind is the small inukshuk cairn in the foreground.
