A Toronto Collection.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Luke Anowtalik transformed his approach to his antler art. Moving away from smaller constructions, he began carving monolithic figures that incorporated spirits, animals, and faces, directly on to the antlers. These carvings integrated seamlessly with the antlers' natural grooves, enhancing their organic shapes. The brief but dynamic antler creations of this period are characterized by a playful dynamism, with scenes of figures and animals that appear to gather or frolic together. His skillful compositions utilize the full curves and forms of the antlers, arranging figures in ways that seem to breathe life into each piece.
