Gabriel Bracho (1915 - 1995) was a major social realist in Venezuelan art, adapting the revolutionary style of the Mexican muralists. Graduate of the Caracas Academy of Fine Arts and the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas in Chile, from 1943 to 1950 Bracho worked in the USA, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, Italy, and several years in Paris. In 1950 and 1951 Bracho held exhibitions in the Caracas Museum of Fine Arts, and in 1953 completed the first major mural ‘Venezuela’ (now destroyed). Bracho worked in Mexico with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and in 1957 exhibited his work at the palace of fine art in Mexico City. Bracho was a cofounder of the Venezuelan Taller de Arte Realista group in 1958. In 1960, he created the Cuba mural in Habana’s La Casa de las Américas.Bracho won the First Prize at the 1976 Exhibition of Modern Realistic Painting in Bulgaria, and the Armando Reveron prize in 1986. In 1994 he held a major exhibition in the Venezuelan National Gallery and was awarded the prestigious Venezuelan National Prize of Plastic Arts. Main works include Nochebuena de los Negros, Tierra, Stalingrado, Petróleo, Hiroshima, El Abanderado, Manifestación, the murals Venezuela (1952–1953), Lino de Clemente (1966–1967), Diversiones, Venezuela (1971–1972), as well as Boyacá (1983) in the presidential palace Miraflores. His home in Los Puertos de Altagracia is now a museum dedicated to his memory and work.
