Was an American Modern master, famous for his realist oil paintings of both rural and city life in the United States. His iconic 1942 painting Nighthawks portrays a late-night downtown Manhattan diner in the artists inimitable smooth style, and has become an indelible depiction of urban alienation. He was born on July 22, 1882 in Nyack, NY, and began his art studies by postal correspondence course in 1899. He transferred to the New York Institute of Art and Design (which later became Parsons) in 1900, where he studied for five years. Hopper went on to work at an advertising agency as an illustrator of trade magazine covers for many years. He sold his first painting, Sailing, in 1913 at the age of 31, and following the sale of six of his watercolors to the Brooklyn Museum in 1923, he was able to retire from illustration and devote himself to painting full time. He died on May 15, 1987 in New York, NY after having achieved widespread acclaim, and is remembered as a quintessentially American artist. His works are held in institutions around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among many others.
