THE FORD MODEL A

It was always going to be a significant challenge to follow the revolutionary Model T, and if it were up to Henry Ford, he would have carried on spitting out endless supplies of Model Ts without a second thought. But innovation is relentless, especially in the burgeoning car market, and Ford's competitors had surpassed the T with designs that were more appealing, more user-friendly, and competitively priced. Henry's son Edsel Ford knew that the company needed a new car to survive. Unlike his fiercely pragmatic father, Edsel had a keen sense of aesthetic design, and he insisted that a good-looking car was just as important to buyers of the time. Utilizing a refined version of the T's venerable L-head inline-four, the Model A finally adopted 'conventional' 3-pedal controls and a 3-speed sliding gear transmission. The basic styling was inspired by the contemporary Lincoln designs, and body styles were numerous and varied from sporty roadsters to closed sedans, station wagons, and commercial vehicles. While built in smaller numbers than the ubiquitous Model T, the Model A was nothing short of a resounding success, with over 4.8 million worldwide produced between 1928 and 1931.

THE CAR OFFERED

This handsome 1929 Model A Phaeton is offered from the care of enthusiastic collectors, during which time it has been carefully maintained to preserve its excellent restoration. Finished in period-correct colors of Washington Blue with black fenders and accents, it is a particularly attractive example that has been fully restored with an eye toward authenticity. The soft trim is restored using authentic materials such as a heavy grain vinyl top, and smooth-grain vinyl seats. Details include windwings, polished radiator shell, black-painted wire wheels with blackwall tires, a period correct Quail mascot, and trunk rack. The consignor reports it runs well, and while the restoration is older, it has been carefully stored indoors between occasional jaunts. Receipts on file show extensive maintenance done within the last few years to include 5 new Universal tires and tubes, fluid changes, a complete tune-up, new rear brakes, a new radiator, and more – to the tune of over $12,400. In 2020, a new wiring harness was installed, and the steering box and column were completely overhauled with a stabilizer added, totaling an additional $6,000.
