Description
CARROLL, LEWIS

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. London: MacMillan, 1869. Second (first published) edition, later printing ("seventeenth thousand" on title), a presentation copy inscribed to "John Parry with the Author's kind regards" (this is plausibly the noted comic artist John Orlando Parry; with a later autograph note signed by Dodgson tipped to the front endpaper, six lines plus address ("Ch.[rist] Ch.[urch] Oxford) written to "My dear Georgie," with authorial or editorial advice "I think it very desirable to tell the readers of your story what you have told me in p. 3 of enclosed letter—So I should be glad to put it in as a preface, if you will write it out in the form in which you would like it to appear, yours always afftely, C. L. Dodgson" Publisher's cloth stamped in gilt, h. 7 x 4 1/2 inches (18 x 12 cm); half-title, 192 pp., illustrated throughout by John Tenniel. The cloth a bit soiled, the spine defective, joints cracked, hinges frail, generally a clean copy internally. A slip advertising his Phantasmogoria is also tipped-in.

While this is a worn copy, and is not the first printing, it is nevertheless an interesting presentation copy, especially if, as we conjecture, the recipient was the illustrator John Orlando Parry. Parry had issued some illustrated limericks much in the manner of Lear, of which Dodgson would likely have approved, and his comic works were well regarded at the time. The tipped-in letter is unrelated, and is written to Dodgson's cousin, Georgina Allen. At least one other letter on the same matter to her exists, dated 17 July, 1896, that discussing illustrations to a book that she had authored. Dodgson was much involved with the publication of this work, entitled The Lost Plum Cake: A Tale for Tiny Boys, overseeing communications with both the illustrator and the publisher. It was privately published by Macmillan in 1896, and a trade edition was issued in January 1898 with an introduction by him, which was the last piece by him to appear in print in his lifetime.
