He was also a noted historian of his native city and is best known today for his beautifully illustrated Beschryvinge van Amsterdam or Description of Amsterdam. Most of the fine copper engraved views are by Petrus Schenk and are characterised by the inclusion of busy street and waterway scenes around the grand buildings of the city.
