A BLANC-DE-CHINE VASE, ZUN
17th century
Of archaistic form, the mid-section decorated with four quatrelobed panels containing the incised inscription song mingyue zhi shi, dong yue shu (a poem for the moon, written in the winter month), the neck incised with four Daoist emblems, hongmu stand.

The inscription is taken from a poem by the late Yuan/early Ming poet Kao Ch'i, renowned for his contributions to the fields of lyric poetry and ci poetry. This form of lyric poetry first emerged during the Song Dynasty. Kao's works are noted for their elegance, emotional depth, and intricate use of language and imagery. Kao Ch'i's poetry often explores themes of love, nature, and the transience of life.
