This dress is inspired by one worn by Jackie Kennedy in 1961 for a gala reception for the President of Peru held at the White House. It was designed by Oleg Cassini (1913-2006). Cassini and Ms Kennedy met in 1953, and when John F Kennedy became President and Jackie Kennedy the First Lady, she appointed the designer as her personal couturier. Regarding the black and gold dress, Cassini wrote in One Thousand Days of Magic '...one of my favorite color (sic) combinations - jet black contrasted with vivid Tintoretto mustard-gold.'
