James Denmark (American, b. 1936), Seated Girl
acrylic and collage on board, 2005, signed at lower left, matted and framed under Plexiglass.
Board 22 1/2 x 30 in.; Frame dimensions 38 x 31 in.
James Denmark was born and raised in Winter Haven, Florida. Many members of his family were artists working in various media and encouraged the young boy to pursue his talents. He received his BFA at the Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University. Next, Denmark moved to New York City and received his MFA from the Pratt Institute of Fine Art. At Pratt, he studied under Jacob Lawrence, who introduced him to Romare Bearden, both of whom profoundly influenced his work.
James Denmark's work is found in many prominent public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, The Brooklyn Museum, the High Museum in Atlanta, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Johnson Collection in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
