Description
A Russian Orthodox hand-painted oil icon on board depicting the Virgin of Vladimir, with a metal oklad (or riza) bearing spurious Moscow kokoshnik mark and spurious mark of Pavel Ovchinnikov. Russian, circa early 20th century. Enamel decoration on the corner spandrels and on the figures' halos, red velvet wrap around the board. Measures 12 1/4" x 10 1/4".
Condition
The oil on board has a network of craquelure; the oil shows aging/ wear including abrasions and a little bit of blistering and areas of bloom, but those are restricted to the areas covered by the oklad. Tarnish to the oklad.
