Description
South America, Colombia, Muzo region, ca. millions of years ago. A beautiful specimen of rough beryl emeralds and pyrite formations. The emerald crystals are a milky and vivid green (nearly gem grade) hue, form within a quartz and calcite matrix with pyrite inclusions. Pyrite is associated with emerald deposits and can occur as inclusion within the emerald crystals or as separate crystals within the same geological setting - as seen here. Pyrite is famous for its beautiful shine that closely resembles gold to the untrained prospector- hence the nickname "fool's gold." Emeralds are a vibrantly green variety of beryl, and they are the most valuable gem grade variety as well. The unique geography and geological features of the region which include hydrothermal brines (hot salty water from volcanic activity) that are rich with the minerals necessary to create the green hue that make Colombian emeralds the greenest in the world. Size: 1.71" L x 1.23" W x 0.95" H (4.3 cm x 3.1 cm x 2.4 cm); weight: 51.1 grams
