An elaborate wood N'tomo mask of the Bamana people of West Africa featuring a stylized visage crowned by 6 horns, 2 antelopes, and 2 kneeling figures; this excessive imagery is a combination of Chi'Wara superstructure types. N'tomo masks are associated with a stage in the compulsory education of uncircumcised boys in certain West African societies. The petite, closed mouth is intended to stress the behavior expected in their future adult life at the end of the training: controlling and weighing one?s words, knowing how to remain silent, safeguarding secrets and bearing pain in silence.
