Biography: Little is currently known about the background and training of Florida landscape painter, Kasper A. Zimmermann. Census records record his birth in German-speaking Switzerland in 1927. Zimmermann probably came to the United States in the 1950s when he worked for Holland American Lines on their cruise-ship, New Amsterdam, which was recommissioned after the war in 1947. The official List or Manifest of Aliens Employed on the Vessel as Members of Crew of 1950 shows Zimmermann as employed by the Holland American Line but as a resident of Switzerland. K. A. Zimmermann was a painter of considerable skill and talent. His panoramic landscapes of south Florida locales demonstrate the hand of a trained artist with an academic background and a thorough knowledge of Florida terrain, flora, fauna, and atmosphere. While Zimmermann often idealized his landscape through the choice of a highly selected subject matter and a smooth and refined application of oils or watercolors, he successfully captures the rarified essence of the Florida landscape experience in his cleverly conceived and well-executed paintings. Among the best of his mid-career topographical works, The Skiff, Matheson Hammock, ca, 1965, captures a tanned young man unfurling the sails of his fishing skiff on a sun-lit afternoon. Here Zimmermann’s brushstroke, unlike his earlier tighter academic style, is broad, painterly and visceral as he portrays the figure of a young man and his rowboat and skiff seen against the landscape elements of the foreground where a large gnarled Live Oak tree resplendent with Spanish moss frames the right foreground of this scene. Across the channel and pointing out to deeper water, Zimmermann paints three mature Palm trees and a stand of mangroves in the painting’s left mid-ground. Overhead a blue Florida sky filled with billowing clouds on the horizon completes this scene of youthful fishing culture on the southeast Atlantic coast of Florida, near Miami.
