Signed C. Westchiloff at the Lower Left, verso stamped Lee's Art Shop, 209 West 57th Street, N. Y.
Oil on Artist Board 18 x 14, Wood Frame 21 x 17 inches.
Constantine Westchiloff lived in New York on 58 West 57th Street from 1939 until passing in 1945, leaving his studio to paint seascapes and harbors around Ogunquit M.E., and mountain streams in the Adirondacks. Westchiloff bought his art supplies at Lee's Art Shop and from 1936 exhibited at Metropolitan-Reynolds Gallery at 32 East 57th Street, and later, on its inaugural exhibition on 50 Rockefeller Plaza, which dates this Adirondacks scene between 1939 and 1945.
Constantine Westchiloff (Konstantin Aleksandrovich Veschilov), Russian painter, landscape artist, graphic artist, set designer. From 1898 studied under Ilya Repin at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, won the 1904 award, and held a foreign study fellowship from the Academy in 1905-06. For two decades, Westchiloff developed as a genre and landscape painter, theater decorator and illustrator, a talented portrait painter and draftsman, was successful and recognized by the public in Russia, and held the honorary position of official artist of the Naval Ministry. Most of Westchiloff's oeuvre created in this period are in Russian museums and private collections.
Westchiloff emigrated from Soviet Russia in 1922, lived in Italy (1923-1928), in France (1929-1936), and actively exhibited in Europe and America.
In Paris, on the Spring Salons, the Chevalier Galleries (1928), d'Alignan (1931), La Renaissance (1932), Laurenceau (1934), personal exhibitions in Charpentier (1927, 1928), Faubourg Saint-Honore (1929), Ecal (1930, 1931). He also exhibited in the Salon des Amis de l ' Art in Bordeaux, in Belgrade (1930), Brussels (1930), Hradec Kralove, Brno (1931, 1932), and Prague (1935). In the USA his works were presented at the National Academy of Design in New York (1942, 1943), the Metropolitan-Reynolds Gallery, 1935, 1936, 1942).
The collection of Robert Lehman at the Metropolitan Museum of Art includes five paintings and one etching by Westchiloff. Works by Westchiloff are also in the Tretyakov Gallery and Russian Museum in Moscow, in several city museums throughout Russia and Ukraine, in the Luxembourg Museum in Paris, and private collections.
