The 2013 30th Anniversary MTV Video Music Awards 'Moonman Trophy' designed by KAWS.
KAWS brought his signature skull character style to the iconic Moonman statuette to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the award show. Designed by KAWS, some 60 pieces were produced and awarded to category winners. Six artist proofs were rendered and given to KAWS who archived them.
As a symbol of his long-standing friendship with Pharrell (who performed with Daft Punk at the 2013 award show), KAWS has contributed one of the 6 artist proofs to the "Just Phriends" auction. “If it were not for this unique occasion celebrating Pharrell, I would not have considered selling this work,” he said of the piece.
20 years after its introduction, the original KAWS x MTV 'Moonman Award' referenced above sold at the "Just Phriends" auction on June 27, 2023 for more than $256,000.

The MTV Video Music Awards (commonly abbreviated as the VMAs) is an award show presented by the cable channel MTV to honour the best in the music video medium.
Originally conceived as an alternative to the Grammy Awards (in the video category), the annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony has often been called the "Super Bowl for youth", an acknowledgment of the VMA ceremony's ability to draw millions of youth from teens to 20-somethings each year.
