Description

A rare and historically significant series of five silver prints documenting the hanging of E.W. Hawkins, the last public execution at the Pima County Courthouse in Tucson, Arizona Territory, on August 14, 1908. These compelling images offer a haunting glimpse into a pivotal moment in Arizona's legal history, capturing the somber atmosphere of the event and the individuals involved.

Description of the Silver Prints:

The series of five silver prints meticulously document the hanging of E.W. Hawkins, convicted for the murder of Albert Leonhardt on December 23, 1907. Each print offers a different perspective of the event, from the solemn preparation on the scaffold to the aftermath of the execution. Included in the images are Sheriff Nabor Pacheco and Undersheriff Henry Meyers, underscoring the gravity of the occasion and the official involvement in the execution. Unfortunately when the scaffold trap door was opened, Hawkins neck was not broken. As a result, he did not die immediately.
