Artista: Constant PERMEKE (1886-1952)Title: Female nudeTechnique: charcoal pencil drawingConstant Permeke (Antwerp, July 31, 1886 - Ostend, January 4, 1952) was a Belgian painter and sculptor, considered the main representative of Flemish expressionism. He was a member of the Sint-Martens-Latem artists' colony, along with Albert Servaes, Gustave Van de Woestijne, Gustave De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe. Influenced by the Renaissance painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder and by James Ensor, his themes focused on coastal landscapes and portraits of sailors and fishermen. During the First World War he took refuge in Great Britain, receiving the influence of Cubism and African art. From 1935 he also devoted himself to sculpture. His studio in Jabbeke, near Bruges, is now a museum dedicated to his work.
