Description
"The Harvard Classics" compiled and edited by Harvard University President Charles W. Eliot. A complete 51-volume set of classic works of world literature, important speeches, and historical documents, published by P.F. Collier & Son Company, New York, copyright 1909-1910, illustrated with frontispiece.

The Southwark Edition which was published in 1919 in flexible dark green DuPont 'Fabrikoid' [imitation leather]. The set was named after the birthplace of one of the founders of Harvard College, John Harvard, who was born in London Borough of Southwark. The new binding material, called fabrikoid, offered less weight, flexible boards, and bindings that were more durable than the cloth or leather bindings of the early editions.

Semi-soft fabricoid [faux leather] covers with blind embossed "Veritas" emblem on the front boards, gold stamped spines; 5.1/4" x 8"; green decorated endpapers with Veritas emblems; the front endpaper of the Vol. 36. (Machiavelli, More, Luther) is creased at the hinges [see last photo], one page corner fold- this volume was read, other volumes appear to be unread, gilt upper page edges, very good condition.
