Beatrix (Beatrice) Sherman, American, 1894-1975, Nine full length silhouettes of Washington D.C. Political personages, includes Joe Cannon and Champ Clark (Speakers of the House), John W. Weeks (U.S. Secretary of War), Wallace Streeter (Secretary to Hamilton Lewis) Robert Lansing (Counselor to the State Department World War I, Diplomat), autographed with verso personal artists notation. Biography: Beatrix Sherman styled herself after 19th C. French silhouette artist Auguste Edouart. Sherman, like Edouart, kept books with an extra copy of each sitter's silhouette enabling her to create an extensive personal archive that included both the silhouettes and the sitter's (sic.) autographs. Sherman traveled extensively, established a permanent studio in Manhattan throughout the 1950’s. She attended art classes at The Art Students League, eventually becoming a lifetime member. From an early age, she had begun copyrighting silhouettes of several of the famous people she cut. Sherman’s subjects include all the U.S. Presidents, as well as other politicians, military leaders, writers, royalty, prominent businessmen and women, socialites, athletes, artists, theatre, film actors, producers and directors.
