Description
British Oil on Canvas, Ca. Early 19th C., the Artist's Studio, H 25" W 30" | Unsigned. Interior scene of an artist's studio with four caricatured figures. Artist paints at his easel as a subject stands for a portrait and two gentlemen look over a book. Having a period giltwood and gesso frame, H 38", W 33". Stretcher verso bearing a handwritten label with an inventory number of H143. HA238 painted on the stretcher verso as well. Provenance: Collection of Peter B. Frantz (1921-2019), Bay City, MI. By family descent.
Condition
Canvas trimmed and relined. Overall masking varnish fluoresces under UV light. Touch of overpaint at the chair leg on the left side. Scattered inpainting obscured by the varnish (appears craquelure was stabilized).
