Burkina Faso, Bobo Peoples, Carved Wood Helmet Mask: Antelope (Nyanga), Ca. Early to Mid 20th C., H 36" W 10" | Large helmet mask, possibly carved from a single circular tree trunk. This mask resembles the hippotrague, a species of antelope native to West Africa, distinctive through its ringed horns that curve backwards and a sloping snout. the mask is decorated with triangles in white, black, and red pigment. the mouth and eyes are also outlined in white pigment. Holes along opening of mask, possibly for attachments now lost or to attach mask to a costume. Provenance: Property from a Bloomfield Hills, MI private collector.
Condition
Overall condition is good for age of mask. Wear to pigment on tops and tips of horns. Red and black pigment has wear among triangle design above eyes. White pigment has remained overall.
