Mali, Bamana of Malinke Peoples, Carved Wood Mask: Monkey (N'Gon Koun), Ca. 20th Century, H 13" W 6" | Mask combining animal and human traits called n'gon koun, meaning “monkey,” most likely belonged to the Korè, one of six power associations shared by the Malinke and Bamana peoples. Masks such as these may have served as one of the symbols of the different Korè classes. the elongated face of this mask could possibly have been influcence by the Marka - a neighboring peoples. Provenance: Property from a Bloomfield Hills, MI private collector.
Condition
Overall signs of age appropriate wear. Some scuffing to the nose and ears. Three hairline cracks on top of mask, above right eye.
