Item Details
Description
A well-wrought example with characteristic rolled pommel, the grip retaining its original gilt-braid bordered textile wrap. The brass guard with engraved borders. The blade wrought of dramatic pattern-welded damascus steel, with pronounced T-back and expanded yelman back edge, elaborately inlaid with silver in complex rectangular panels at either side of the forte, comprising geometrical motifs bordered by vinework, terminating on the left with a cartouche surmounted by a moon and star, containing an unidentified four-legged beast wielding a sword, and at the right a warrior mounted on horseback bearing a spear and surrounded by edged weapons, the terminal in the form of a cross. The scabbard with elaborately embossed and chased brass mounts likely later, with blue and white silk covering. First quarter of the 19th century. Minor wear, silk rubbed and soiled. The silver inlaid images represent the Greek struggle against the Ottomans, personified by the mounted horseman with lance beneath a cross as Saint George and the amorphous beast armed with a sword beneath a moon and star as the Ottoman Empire. Overall length 90.4 cm / 35 5/8". Condition II
