East Asia, China, Northern Song Dynasty, Guangdong, Xicun kiln, ca. early 12th century CE. A fabulous stoneware basin of sizable scale presenting a concave base and thick walls that swell outwards to an inward-rolled rim. Enveloped in brown glaze, the vessel has been impressed with 6 floral motifs at the center of its interior basin. Remains of symbols painted onto the underside of the base may have once been Chinese characters indicating ownership. This basin bears a striking resemblance to those found in the Lingga and Pulau Buaya shipwrecks, and thus was likely manufactured in the Xicun kilns of the Guangdong province.
